Abstract
Hypothyroidism is an endocrine disease caused by deficiency in the production of thyroid hormones, which are directly related to the maintenance of metabolism. It occurs mainly in purebred breeds, such as Beagle and Golden Retriever, with an average age between three and eight years. Clinical signs are directly related to reduced metabolism and include mainly weight gain, lethargy, thermophilia and dermatological changes. The definitive diagnosis is achieved by measuring thyroid hormones and treatment is based on specific hormone replacement. The purpose of this report was to demonstrate the clinical and laboratory characteristics of a dog treated at Hospital Veterinário Roque Quagliato-Unifio, diagnosed with hypothyroidism.
