Abstract

Although they are frequent, there are few reports in the literature of hematological and biochemical changes in bitches with malignant mammary neoplasia. We aimed to retrospectively evaluate the hematological and biochemical alterations of female dogs with malignant mammary neoplasia diagnosed at Unifio's Roque Quagliato Veterinary Hospital. Twenty one bitches with malignant mammary neoplasia and 17 healthy control bitches were selected, from which complete blood count and serum biochemical profile were performed. The unpaired t test or Mann-Whitney test was used to verify differences between groups when p<0.05. Bitches with mammary neoplasia had lower hemoglobin content and lower mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration than healthy bitches, with no differences in other erythrogram and leukogram parameters, in addition to higher platelet concentration. Regarding the biochemical parameters, bitches with mammary neoplasia had higher serum concentrations of albumin and lower concentrations of creatinine and urea, with no differences in other parameters. It is concluded that the main hematological and biochemical alterations observed in bitches with malignant mammary neoplasia in the routine of the Unifio's Roque Quagliato Veterinary Hospital were anemia with a tendency towards hypochromia and thrombocytosis, hyperalbuminemia and lower serum levels of creatinine and urea than healthy bitches.
